The $1,000 Daniel B Dingman Scholarship for Peace and Justice was established by the Los Alamos Foundation to honor the memory of Dan Dingman who passed away in September 2013. Dan was a lifelong believer in and practitioner of these causes.
To apply for this scholarship you must attend either St. Joseph, Righetti, or Orcutt Academy high school or live in Los Alamos, California. You must be a senior in good standing and intend to further pursue your education at a 2 or 4-year college or university.
Please look through the application carefully and take the time to answer questions thoughtfully. Remember, we are looking for someone that we believe can be a leader in his/her community and who will show by example that peace and justice are attainable goals. Because this is a college scholarship we will be looking for articulate answers. In addition to the written responses we may also schedule a phone interview with the candidate. Don’t let this intimidate you we simply want to know you a little better.
The Daniel B Dingman Scholarship for Peace and Justice is an academic award; your family’s financial status will have no bearing on our decision.
We are looking for students who have demonstrated a commitment to a cause or causes outside of themselves. By this we mean that the student has given of his/her time to serve interests in the common good, for example: helping to improve the environment through recycling, park cleanup, educating others; volunteering at a senior center, homeless shelter, community activity; participating in peer counseling, anti-bullying activities, or leadership training. Dan showed us that the causes of peace and justice are not served only on a big stage but are actually best served on small stages in many places. Simple acts of compassion and generosity can have far reaching implications. This is why we are not limiting candidacy to students who intend to pursue a degree in these fields. We are looking for students who have already demonstrated these qualities through action.

Why do we ask for essay's?
We are looking for students who care about their community and show it through positive actions such as: environmental work, peer mentoring, serving on committees, bully prevention, writing or visiting the incarcerated, teaching younger students, caring for an elderly, ill, or injured neighbor, etc. We want to see; leadership, follow-through, initiative, compassion, tolerance. If you believe that these are qualities which describe you, or to which you aspire, please consider applying.
The scholarship application should be completed and submitted online. You may type directly into the form or cut and paste from a text or word file. If you have a compelling reason why this would not be possible please contact us directly, or through your guidance counselor, and we will do our best to accommodate you. We require a certified copy of your high school transcript. This is a common request and your school office will be able to do this for you. Please have your transcript sent to: Monna L Dingman, The Los Alamos Foundation, PO Box 477, Los Alamos, CA 93440 Your transcript must arrive no later than May 9, 2022
We require 3 letters of recommendation. At least one should be academic and at least one should be community. Please ask your references to email their recommendation to: peacescholar@thelosalamosfoundation.org Be sure to verify that the persons you choose are willing and able to provide a reference for you. Your application packet cannot be forwarded to the scholarship committee until we have all three of your references.
We know that the word "essay" can drive fear into the heart of any student. We considered carefully the question of asking for essays because we know that not every otherwise excellent student is adept at writing. We all have different skill sets, fortunately, because it adds up to the diversification communities need to thrive. Still, your GPA, class rank, and test scores don't tell the whole story, do they? We want to know how you think and how you might use your skills to create a better world. If you are pursuing math or sciences, for example, we'd like to know how those interests fit into your broader social ethic. That can only be explored in an essay. There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, so please don't panic. if you have a compelling reason why a written essay is not a good option for you please contact us directly, or through your adviser, and we will do our best to accommodate you.
